摘要:East Asian societies/regions has been known internationally as both high-achieving and exam-oriented societies. All of these societies have experienced rapid modernization, and education has played a crucial role in the process. In these societies, education is seen as a major vehicle to success, which results in a high pressure to excel. However, now Japan is 4th ranked among countries in terms of income inequality, and half of the social classes suffer from poverty. The gap between the rich social classes and the poor social classes is increasing. To overcome these problems and to improve quality of education for equality and excellence, national curriculum has been revised, teachers’ license renewal system and the school evaluation system have been introduced. National education reform are proceeding rapidly now. In the movement of decentralization, deregulation, neo-liberalism, neo-conservatism, buzzwords such as” efficiency” and “accountability” push these radical ‘reformism’. In my talk, I talk about these national reforms and the results of this reformism.
