Dr. John Aubrey Douglass
(Senior Research Fellow, Center for Studies in Higher Education, University of California at Berkeley)
John Douglass is a Senior Research Fellow whose current research interests are focused on the student experience in research universities, the role of universities in economic development, science policy as a component of national and multinational economic policy, the evolving role of mass higher education in society, and the influence of globalization.
He has served as the deputy director of the Center from 1999 to 2002 and is the editor of Research and Occasional Papers Series of the Center. Before coming to CSHE, he served as the chief policy analyst for Systemwide Academic Senate of the University of California and held teaching and research positions at UC Santa Barbara. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Institute d Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), a Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (OxCHEPS) and a Visiting Policy Analyst at the California Postsecondary Education Commission.
Dr. Douglass is the author of The California Idea and American Higher Education (Stanford University Press 2000) recently reissued in paperback and also published in Chinese with a special preface.
He is also the author of The Conditions for Admission: Access, Equity and the Social Contract of Public Universities (Stanford University Press 2007). Recent scholarly publications include articles in Higher Education Policy and Management (OECD), Higher Education Policy (Association of International Universities), Perspectives (UK), Change Magazine, Minerva, The Journal of Policy History, California Politics and Policy, History of Education Quarterly, The American Behavioral Scientists, and the European Journal of Education.
He is also the founding director of the UC History Digital Archives (UCHDA) and is a co-Principal Investigator in the CSHE-based Student Experience in the Research University project (SERU) which developed the University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES)–a census survey of all undergraduates with the objective of creating analytical tools for improving the undergraduate experience.
