Enacting Leadership: Same Direction, Different Routes
Enacting Leadership: Same Direction, Different Routes
Speaker: Prof. Allan Walker This talk attempts to introduce a number of current trends in leadership thought. The general argument is that leaders do make a difference in educational organisations; context matters in that it influences how leaders think and act and that worthwhile action reflects these contexts. The talk has a number of sections. The first section outlines a number of trends, including increased consideration of how multiple contexts influence leadership practice. These contexts can relate to the social, physical, political, cultural or personal situations within which leaders lead. The second section targets how leadership is perceived in different societies. This is illustrated briefly through outlining the recent GLOBE Study. The third section focuses on a set of important effective leadership process common across the world but makes the point that how these are enacted differs according to the context within which leaders lead. Fourth, the talk attempts to apply leadership to higher education contexts. More specifically, what leaders of faculties, centres or departments can do to improve their unit’s effectiveness? The talk concludes with a number of propositions/questions to further guide discussion of leadership in educational organisation.
